The research group IT-Security is part of the Computer Science Department of RWTH Aachen University. The group studies and teaches security problems and solutions for various types of communication networks. The main focus of the group is on security in wireless networks, cryptographic privacy-enhancing technologies, and (mobile) malware. 

Research Assistant - PhD Candidate

Work­ing field:

You actively par­ti­ci­pate in secu­rity and cryp­tog­rahy rela­ted rese­arch pro­jects in the con­text of one or more fun­ded pro­jects. You are expec­ted to publish and pre­sent your rese­arch results at inter­na­tio­nal con­fe­ren­ces and work­shops. You will be given the oppor­tu­nity to pre­pare your Ph.D. the­ses during your employ­ment. Your teaching duties will be 4 hours per week and semes­ter.

Please include the fol­lo­wing infor­ma­tion in your app­li­ca­tion: a cover let­ter that indi­ca­tes your main area of inte­rest and your moti­va­tion for app­ly­ing, your CV, a refe­rence let­ter from one of your aca­de­mic super­vi­sors, and a com­pre­hen­sive score record.


You have an excel­lent mas­ters degree (or equi­va­lent) in Com­pu­ter Sci­ence and a solid back­ground in cryp­to­gra­phy and/or infor­ma­tion secu­rity. Alter­na­tively, you ear­ned your out­stan­ding degree in Mathe­ma­tics or Phy­sics and have a very strong inte­rest in Com­pu­ter Sci­ence and in app­lied secu­rity and/or cryp­to­gra­phy in par­ti­cu­lar. You are highly inte­rested in at least one of the fol­lo­wing topics:

  • Serious gaming
  • Elec­tro­nic teaching / inno­va­tive learning tech­no­lo­gies
  • Pri­vacy-enhan­cing tech­no­lo­gies
  • Machine Learning and ano­mo­lie detec­tion

Deep know­ledge and prac­tical expe­ri­ence in at least one hig­her pro­gramming lan­guage is a must. Your Eng­lish is flu­ent and you have basic know­ledge of Ger­man or are wil­ling to learn it. You are com­for­ta­ble working res­pon­sibly and inde­pendently. You have excel­lent com­mu­ni­ca­tion skills and are a team player. Any form of teaching expe­ri­ence is highly appre­cia­ted and a high moti­va­tion to get invol­ved in teaching is indis­pensa­ble.

What we of­fer:

The posi­tion is fixed term for initi­ally 1 year and is to be fil­led as soon as pos­si­ble. An exten­sion of the con­tract for ano­ther 2 years is plan­ned. This is a full-time posi­tion. It is also avail­able as part-time employ­ment per request.

The suc­cess­ful can­di­date has the oppor­tu­nity to pur­sue a doc­to­ral degree.

The salary cor­re­sponds to level EG 13 TV-L.
